Description & Characteristics
The spring onion is a special form of the table onion and the winter onion. It is harvested "too early", its lower end is just beginning to thicken into an onion. However, its name is
misleading as it is available in stores all year round. In winter it is mostly imported from southern foreign countries.
It is characterised by the narrow, tubular leaves of the leek bulb, which clearly distinguish it from the leek, which is characterised by smooth, flat stems.
